Finding a job isn’t easy, especially if this is the first time you’re looking, but it’s also far from impossible. The key is to prioritize what’s most important to you in the process. How picky are you when it comes to location, salary, and position? Are you willing to look outside of your field of study if it means a steady paycheck? Are you willing to stay unemployed for a while if it means finding that perfect gig? Once you answer these important questions, you’ll have a starting point from which to begin finding a job that meets most (if not all) of your prioritized criteria.

To help you even further, we’ve come up with some tips below on finding a job. Although the process inevitably involves quite a bit of responsibility on your part, as you’re going to be the one who will need to do the legwork when it comes to finding suitable job prospects, these tips should help you go into the search more confidently. Take a look at what we’ve come up with below to get a sense of how you can use what you already know, what you can find out easily, and any obstacles you may need to prepare yourself for when finding a job.
Use Available Resources

If you haven’t already, start building a relationship with your college’s career counseling office. They may be plugged in to positions that never even appear on outside job boards, and may point you to opportunities you hadn’t considered before. Once you’re done there, talk to your professors and advisors, especially those who have contacts in your field of study. They may know about positions opening up at companies or organizations that haven’t yet been publicized. If you’ve had any internships or volunteer experiences while in school (as we hope you have), it’d be wise to contact those who acted as your managers. It’s often all about who you know in the job search, and even if you don’t find a position through those internship or community service leaders, those contacts may help put you in touch with others in their industry that could help you get your foot in the door.

After you’ve talked to all of your academic and professional contacts, continue asking around about job prospects among parents, relatives, friends, and acquaintances. Expand your networking tree. Get on those alumni listservs as a new graduate, as job listings are routine in alumni emails and newsletters. Get yourself on a free job search service, and look at job boards related to your field of study. (It’s important to make sure you’re only looking at reputable job sites; as with your scholarship search, you shouldn’t have to pay to search for jobs.) Put yourself out there, whether that’s via social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.), networking events, resume posting sites, or through your own word of mouth efforts. Chances are good that at least one of the efforts above will pay off. It’s up to you, however, to make a good impression on paper and in person.
Entry Level Jobs

A college graduate’s first job after graduation is typically an entry level job, or a position that requires less experience than one reserved for a more seasoned professional. Although you shouldn’t just take any job that offers you a position without doing some research on the company or organization in question, you should also be realistic. It’s rare for a recent graduate to find that perfect job right off the bat and to cultivate a life-long career out of that first position. Do understand though that this job will be an important piece of your resume once you are ready to find that dream job, and the work you do there will be what your next employer will want to hear about. How you go about finding and landing that entry level job won’t differ much from the job search of an experienced worker, and you’ll probably have the best luck finding job listings through alumni listservs, reputable job search sites, and your college’s career office.
The State of the Economy

If you find yourself in the wrong place at the wrong time, or more specifically, graduating at a time when unemployment rates are high and the state of the economy has made it difficult for not only new graduates but experienced professionals to find work, you may need to adjust your job search strategies. We’re not saying that you should jump at the first reasonable opportunity offered, but we are saying that you may need to be more open-minded. You may need to look outside the 10-mile radius that you had set for yourself initially, or be more realistic about your pay expectations. A job outside of your field of study may not be a bad idea either, as you may even find yourself expanding your skill sets or discovering a passion for a different line of work. Most servicemembers, particularly enlisted personnel, lack adequate civilian job-hunting skills so are ill prepared for the current rabid competition for decent jobs. Even successful companies and agencies at all government levels are “right sizing” to remain profitable and competitive. Meanwhile, many professionals and managers have had to lower their career expectations and accept lesser positions to remain employed. In some cases, positions normally considered “enlisted turf” are being accepted by retiring officers and highly qualified civilians.

These trends can dampen the hopes of former military personnel who are trying to get it right the first time out of the chute. The truth is, many former servicemen and -women will be unemployed, partially unemployed, or underemployed during their first years out of the military. This is particularly true for enlisted, junior, and less well educated men and women. A disproportionate number will accept jobs not commensurate with their skills and abilities, because few employers understand or will compensate adequately for maturity, development, and leadership qualities. Often, prospective employers offer lower wages to retirees knowing they are receiving retired pay, and falsely believe retirees do not merit the same compensation as civilians applying for the same positions.

The best advice for those leaving the armed forces is to take their job searches seriously. The military does not prepare servicemen and -women to look for jobs effectively—the best positions go to those who are best equipped to find them. A good deal of homework and a determined, disciplined effort will be required. Someone with average skills and salary requirements should spend 30 to 40 hours a week on his or her search. Someone who wants to earn a high salary, is more than 40 years old, or is in a minority demographic should spend 45 to 60 hours weekly.

A job-search campaign likely will last between three and nine months—or about a month for every $10,000 in salary desired—and longer for older or minority candidates or those with less education or without recent training. Transitioning personnel should begin planning a year before their departure dates, investigating relocation, occupational aptitude, additional training and education, and adjustment to civilian life. Depending on circumstances and finances, some may need to begin transitioning sooner.

Take-home pay decreases significantly when a servicemember separates or retires from active duty. On separation or retirement, military personnel lose housing and subsistence allowances, family separation pay, health coverage, death gratuities, and a host of other benefits. Success is, or at least should be, primarily defined as an achievement of something desired. So, the most successful people are the ones who achieve the things they most desire. What we desire the most, even more than money, is to be proud of what we do with our lives. This is especially true when it comes to our work. A truly successful person is one who is proud of the work he or she does. That, is the true meaning of success. Now, a lot of money shouldn’t be the primary definition of success, but it’s a reasonable goal to have. We all want to have enough money to sustain ourselves and our family. The thing is, if we’re truly passionate about the work we do, there’s probably a better chance that money will follow.

What I Mean by Passion
When I speak of passion, I don’t mean it in the romantic way. What I mean by passion is the powerful feeling of enthusiasm we all have inside of us. We are all enthusiastic and passionate about something, whether its finance, food or a favorite sport. That enthusiasm is very powerful. When we can combine it with our work, we are setting ourselves up well for achieving true success.

When we are enthusiastic and proud of the work we do, the better equipped we’ll be to overcome the many obstacles that will surely arise in the process of starting a business or moving up in a career. Also, the more enthusiasm we have, the more inclined we are to work harder at improving ourselves. This will allow us to continuously get better at the work we do. The better we get at our work, the better we can get paid for doing it.

The article is based on multiple interviews with Apple employees and Steve Jobs himself. Believe it or not, the No. 1 principle in this article is, “do what you love.” Steve Jobs believed in the power of passion, and once said, “people with passion can change the world for the better.” Jobs claimed that the passion he had for his work made all the difference.

Chris Gardner
Chris Gardner, the once homeless man turned multi-millionaire stockbroker that Will Smith plays in the movie, “The Pursuit of Happyness,” once expressed what he believes is the secret to success. He stated that he believes the secret is to “find something you love to do so much, you can’t wait for the sun to rise to do it all over again.” He explains that the most inspiring leaders are those who don’t work at a job, but pursue a calling.

Mark Zuckerberg
These days we cannot talk about success without mentioning Facebook and Facebook’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg. The 27-year old billionaire has changed the world we live in. In David Kirkpatrick’s book, “The Facebook Effect: The Inside Story of The Company That is Connecting The World,” Kirkpatrick lists what he believes are Zuckerberg’s ingredients for success. One of these ingredients is, you guessed it, follow your passion – not money. Zuckerberg suggests to “follow your happiness,” and explains that even if you don’t end up making a fortune, you’ll at least be doing what you love.

Warren Buffett
Warren Buffett, known as “the Oracle of Omaha” and probably one of the greatest investors of all time, usually talks about his secrets to successful investing, but even Buffett knows there is more to success than money. In Parade’s article, “10 Ways To Get Rich: Warren Buffett’s Secret That Can Work For You,” Buffet ends off his list of advice with, “know what success really means.” He explains the importance of finding what it is that brings true meaning to our lives, what makes each day important and to make this our focus.

It’s Never Too Late
For those of us who have been thinking, “I’m already following my passion” while reading this article, that’s great! You should appreciate that because you’re in the minority. According to The Conference Board, over 50% of Americans were dissatisfied with their jobs in 2010. It stated that most Americans were only working for their current employer simply because they had to.

Now, obviously most of us have to work one way or another (unless you were born into riches and are completely spoiled). So, don’t just quit your day job because you aren’t completely satisfied. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t pursue another more fulfilling career-path part-time. Have you ever heard the saying, “it’s never too late to be what you could’ve been?” Well it’s true. If you have an idea of where you want to be, you can still make moves towards getting there. If you have a full-time job to support you while you make that transition, that may actually be even better.

True success is much more than having a lot of wealth and fame. Enjoying the work you do is, in some ways, more important than having a large bank account. Plus, if you enjoy the work you do, there’s a greater chance you will do great work and get paid accordingly. I’m one of those people who thinks he was going to college for the wrong thing. I felt a bit of pressure to follow in the footsteps of my dad and grandfather who became lawyers. My brother did not join the family business, and I kind of got the feeling that there was a lot of disappointment toward his career choice. My sister is a lawyer and thriving at it. I dread getting up and going to work now. This is why I decided to participate in career tests and career assessments.

I was working at the family law firm as an intern while attending school. I was in my second semester when I asked to be tested and assessed for what my ideal career would likely be. I had an interest in law and justice, but more of a hands-on interest rather than a philosophical or intellectual approach to law. The testing showed clearly that I would likely make an excellent police officer. Not just any officer, but a detective or Federal investigator.

I knew that I would either have to work as a patrolman for a number of years until earning a gold shield, or I would have to go into work at a federal agency as an expert in a field. When I switched my major at college, my interest shot up a thousand percent. Even working at the family firm was okay now that I had a goal of being something I wanted to be that fit with my personality and goals.

Getting into the street level work of justice and law enforcement was where it was at for me. I will leave the courtroom work to those who are much more enthused and competent with it such as my dad, grandfather and sister. the bestseller book by Mark McCormack From the book What they don’t teach you at Harvard Business School by Mark McCormack:In the book What They Don’t Teach You in the Harvard Business School, Mark McCormack tells a study conducted on students in the 1979 Harvard MBA program. In that year, the students were asked, “Have you set clear, written goals for your future and made plans to accomplish them?” Only three percent of the graduates had written goals and plans; 13 percent had goals, but they were not in writing; and a whopping 84 percent had no specific goals at all.

Ten years later, the members of the class were interviewed again, and the findings, while somewhat predictable, were nonetheless astonishing. The 13 percent of the class who had goals were earning, on average, twice as much as the 84 percent who had no goals at all. And what about the three percent who had clear, written goals? They were earning, on average, ten times as much as the other 97 percent put together.

In spite of such proof of success, most people don’t have clear, measurable, time-bounded goals that they work toward.

In the bestseller “Goals!”, Brian Tracy teaches you how to identify in the clearest terms the things you want out of life, then how to make the plan to help you achieve those things. Brian Tracy says there are four reasons why people don’t set goals:

  • They don’t realize about the importance of goals. If the people with whom you spend the most time — family, friends, colleagues, and so forth — are not clear and committed to goals, there is a chance that you will not be, either.

Overcoming Test Anxiety

 

Overcoming test anxietyIf your one who has extreme nervousness or anxiety for test
taking read this as it may help with your next test.

Most students experience some level of anxiety during an
exam However, when anxiety affects exam performance it has become a problem.

General preparation/building confidence:
Review your personal situation and skills
Academic counselors can help you in these areas, or refer to our Guides on the topic:

  • Developing good study habits and strategies
  • Managing time
    (dealing with procrastination, distractions, laziness)
  • Organizing material to be studied and learned
    Take a step by step approach to build a strategy and not get overwhelmed
  • Outside pressures
    success/failure consequences (grades, graduation), peer pressure, competitiveness, etc.
  • Reviewing your past performance on tests
    to improve and learn from experience

Test preparation to reduce anxiety:

  • Approach the exam with confidence:
    Use whatever strategies you can to personalize success: visualization, logic, talking to yourself, practice, team work, journaling, etc.
    View the exam as an opportunity to show how much you’ve studied and to receive a reward for the studying you’ve done
  • Be prepared!
    Learn your material thoroughly and organize what materials you will need for the test. Use a checklist
  • Choose a comfortable location for taking the test
    with good lighting and minimal distractions
  • Allow yourself plenty of time,
    especially to do things you need to do before the test and still get there a little early
  • Avoid thinking you need to cram just before
  • Strive for a relaxed state of concentration
    Avoid speaking with any fellow students who have not prepared, who express negativity, who will distract your preparation
  • A program of exercise
    is said to sharpen the mind
  • Get a good night’s sleep
    the night before the exam
  • Don’t go to the exam with an empty stomach
    Fresh fruits and vegetables are often recommended to reduce stress.
    Stressful foods can include processed foods, artificial sweeteners, carbonated soft drinks, chocolate, eggs, fried foods, junk foods, pork, red meat, sugar, white flour products, chips and similar snack foods, foods containing preservatives or heavy spices
  • Take a small snack, or some other nourishment
    to help take your mind off of your anxiety.
    Avoid high sugar content (candy) which may aggravate your condition.
  • During the test:

    • Read the directions carefully
    • Budget your test taking time
    • Change positions to help you relax
    • If you go blank, skip the question and go on
    • If you’re taking an essay test
      and you go blank on the whole test, pick a question and start writing. It may trigger the answer in your mind
    • Don’t panic
      when students start handing in their papers. There’s no reward for finishing first

    Use relaxation techniques
    If you find yourself tensing and getting anxious during the test:

    Relax; you are in control.
    Take slow, deep breaths

    Don’t think about the fear
    Pause: think about the next step and keep on task, step by step

    Use positive reinforcement for yourself:
    Acknowledge that you have done, and are doing, your best

    Expect some anxiety
    It’s a reminder that you want to do your best and can provide energy
    Just keep it manageable

    Realize that anxiety can be a “habit”
    and that it takes practice to use it as a tool to succeed

    After the test, review how you did

    • List what worked, and hold onto these strategies
      It does not matter how small the items are: they are building blocks to success
    • List what did not work for improvement
    • Celebrate that you are on the road to overcoming this obstacle

    be sure your teacher or instructor knows before any testing begins
    (and not the hour before!).
